pHneutraalia is a term used to describe a substance or solution whose pH is close to neutral on the pH scale. In most contexts, neutral means a pH around 7, which is considered neither acidic nor basic. The concept is commonly applied in chemistry, biology, medicine, cosmetics, and cleaning products to indicate compatibility with skin, surfaces, and many biological processes.

The pH scale runs from 0 to 14. Values below 7 indicate acidity, values above 7 indicate basicity, and 7 is neutral under standard conditions. Neutrality, however, is temperature dependent. The neutral point for pure water at a given temperature is defined by the balance of hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions, and it shifts as temperature changes. In practice, products labeled “pH-neutral” often target a pH near 7, typically within about 6 to 8, to minimize irritation and corrosion while remaining effective for their intended use.

Measurement and verification usually involve pH meters with glass electrodes or chemical indicator strips. Calibration buffers are used to ensure accuracy, ideally at the measurement temperature, because pH readings can drift with temperature and ionic strength.

Applications of pHneutraalia include cosmetic and personal care products, baby and medical products, and many cleaning agents, where a near-neutral pH helps minimize skin irritation and material compatibility. In environmental and agricultural contexts, maintaining near-neutral pH can influence nutrient availability and ecosystem health, though many systems function across a broader pH range.

Limitations should be noted: a near-neutral pH does not guarantee safety or compatibility, as other ingredients and properties (salinity, buffering capacity, concentration, and irritants) also matter.
