p1p2root is a computational tool used in phylogenetic analysis. It is designed to reconstruct ancestral DNA sequences, a process known as ancestral sequence reconstruction (ASR). ASR aims to infer the genetic makeup of organisms that lived in the past, based on the genetic sequences of their living descendants.

The software takes as input a set of aligned DNA sequences from extant species and a phylogenetic tree representing their evolutionary relationships. Using probabilistic models of nucleotide substitution, p1p2root calculates the most likely ancestral sequences at each internal node of the tree.
