Ozonoinnin, commonly referred to as ozonation in English, is the process of introducing ozone (O3) into water, air, or other media to achieve oxidation, disinfection, and deodorization. Ozone is a powerful oxidant that can react directly with many contaminants and, under certain conditions, decompose to form hydroxyl radicals that broaden its oxidation potential.

Ozone is generated on site using ozone generators that rely on corona discharge or ultraviolet photolysis of oxygen. The produced ozone is then dissolved or diffused into the target medium through mixers, contact chambers, or venturi injectors to ensure adequate contact time and mixing with the contaminant stream. Because ozone does not leave a lasting residual disinfectant, downstream steps or safeguards are often required in water treatment to maintain ongoing protection.

Chemical action in ozoninin is twofold: direct oxidation by ozone and indirect oxidation via hydroxyl radicals formed in water. This enables the attack on a wide range of organic and inorganic substances, including taste and odor compounds, colorants, micropollutants, and microorganisms. However, oxidation can also form disinfection by-products, such as bromate in waters containing bromide, and incomplete mineralization can yield smaller organic fragments that may require further treatment. Residual ozone must be handled carefully and is typically removed before distribution or downstream processes, using off-gas destruction or activated carbon.

Applications span drinking water treatment, wastewater rehabilitation, food and beverage sanitation, and industrial processes requiring odor or color removal. Safety concerns include ozone’s toxicity and the need for proper containment, monitoring, and control to protect workers and the surrounding environment.
