It is derived from the noun znak (sign) and the verb označiti (to mark or designate), with oznaka meaning a label or designation and oznacivanje the process.

In everyday contexts, oznacivanje covers labeling products, organizing inventories, and tagging objects to convey information such as contents, origin, or care instructions. In cartography and geology, it denotes the labeling of map features or rock units. In data management and artificial intelligence, it refers to annotating or tagging data to create labeled datasets for supervised learning. In biology and archaeology, specimens or artifacts are marked with identifiers for reference and study. In safety and industry, labeling of hazardous substances and equipment communicates warnings and handling requirements.
