Oxidijohtimet, often translated as oxygen conductors or oxide ion conductors, are materials that facilitate the movement of oxide ions (O^2-) through their crystal lattice. This ionic conductivity is crucial for various electrochemical applications, most notably in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and oxygen sensors. The mechanism of conduction involves the hopping of oxygen vacancies from one lattice site to an adjacent one. For this process to occur efficiently, the material must possess a specific crystal structure that allows for facile ion migration and a sufficient concentration of these vacancies.

Commonly studied oxidijohtimet are based on ceramic materials, with perovskite-type oxides (ABO3) and fluorite-type oxides (e.g., ZrO2, CeO2) being prominent examples. Doping is frequently employed to enhance ionic conductivity. For instance, in yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), the addition of yttrium oxide (Y2O3) introduces oxygen vacancies by substituting Zr^4+ with Y^3+ ions, thereby increasing the mobility of oxide ions. Similarly, doping ceria with lower-valent cations like gadolinium or samarium also creates oxygen vacancies and improves its conductivity, especially at intermediate temperatures.

The performance of oxidijohtimet is highly dependent on temperature, typically increasing with higher temperatures as more thermal energy is available for ion hopping. However, operating at excessively high temperatures can lead to undesirable side effects like sintering and chemical degradation. Therefore, research focuses on developing materials that exhibit high ionic conductivity at lower, more practical operating temperatures, often referred to as intermediate-temperature SOFCs (IT-SOFCs). The stability and compatibility of these materials with other cell components, such as electrodes and electrolytes, are also critical considerations for their successful implementation.
