Ovulaatioongelma, known in English as ovulatory dysfunction, refers to a condition where a woman's ovaries do not release eggs regularly or at all. This is a common cause of infertility. The normal ovulatory cycle involves the maturation and release of an egg from an ovary, typically once per menstrual cycle. When this process is disrupted, it can lead to difficulties in conceiving.

There are several underlying causes for ovulatory problems. Hormonal imbalances are frequently implicated. Conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) are a leading cause, characterized by irregular periods, excess androgens, and polycystic ovaries. Other hormonal issues can arise from problems with the hypothalamus or pituitary gland, which regulate the hormones responsible for ovulation, or from thyroid dysfunction. Severe stress, excessive exercise, or significant weight fluctuations (both underweight and overweight) can also temporarily disrupt ovulation. Premature ovarian insufficiency, where the ovaries stop functioning before age 40, is another cause.

The primary symptom of ovulatory dysfunction is irregular or absent menstrual periods, which can manifest as very infrequent periods (oligomenorrhea), periods that stop altogether (amenorrhea), or unpredictable bleeding patterns. Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and blood tests to check hormone levels. Ultrasound imaging may also be used to assess the ovaries. Treatment aims to restore regular ovulation and can include lifestyle modifications, medication to induce ovulation, or other fertility treatments.
