Overexpress is a term used in molecular biology to describe the deliberate increase in the expression of a gene beyond its normal level, resulting in higher amounts of RNA and the corresponding protein product within a cell or organism. This can be achieved at multiple levels of gene expression, including transcription, translation, or protein stability, and is commonly used as a tool in research and biotechnology.

Common methods to induce overexpression include introducing strong promoters or high-copy-number constructs in plasmids, using viral vectors for efficient gene delivery, and applying inducible systems that allow controlled upregulation. Techniques that upregulate endogenous genes, such as CRISPR activation (CRISPRa), can also raise native gene expression without inserting a new copy.
