An overenskomstområde, which translates to "collective agreement area" or "collective bargaining sector" in English, refers to a specific segment of the labor market within which collective agreements are negotiated and applied. These areas are typically defined by industry, profession, or type of employer. For example, there might be separate overenskomstområder for the public sector, the manufacturing industry, retail, or healthcare.

The purpose of establishing overenskomstområder is to streamline the collective bargaining process. Instead of individual employers negotiating agreements with every union, negotiations occur within these defined sectors. This allows for the development of sector-specific standards regarding wages, working hours, holidays, pensions, and other terms and conditions of employment.

In countries with a strong tradition of social partnership, such as Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, overenskomstområder play a crucial role in regulating labor relations.
