Overbewerking, often translated as over-processing, is the performance of more work on a product, service, or dataset than is necessary to meet the intended function or customer requirements. It is considered a form of waste in lean management and process optimization, because it adds costs and time without adding value.

In manufacturing and engineering, overbewerking refers to extra operations beyond what the specifications require. Examples include additional milling, finishing, polishing, coating, or inspections that do not affect the part’s function or fit. Causes include unclear or contradictory specifications, poor design for manufacturability, inadequate process planning, or incentives that favor more steps or higher tolerances. The effects are higher production costs, longer lead times, increased energy consumption, and potential quality drift.

In other domains, such as photography, film, or data processing, overbewerking can mean excessive editing, retouching, or data transformations that reduce authenticity or degrade usefulness. For instance, over-editing images can alter the depicted reality, while unnecessary data cleaning can remove valuable information.

Prevention and mitigation focus on clarifying value-added steps, reducing ambiguity in requirements, and aligning processes with customer value. Techniques include value stream mapping, design for manufacturability, standardized work, clear specifications and acceptance criteria, and continuous improvement. Encouraging early design reviews, limiting unnecessary changes, and implementing simple quality gates can help reduce overbewerking and its costs.
