Oscillations refer to repetitive variations, typically in time, of some measure about a central value or equilibrium state. This variation is often described as a periodic motion, meaning it repeats itself after a regular interval of time, known as the period. A fundamental characteristic of oscillations is the presence of a restoring force or mechanism that tends to bring the system back to its equilibrium position when it is displaced.

The simplest and most commonly studied type of oscillation is simple harmonic motion (SHM). In SHM, the restoring force is directly proportional to the displacement from equilibrium and acts in the opposite direction. Examples include a mass attached to a spring or a simple pendulum of small amplitude. The motion can be described mathematically by sinusoidal functions like sine or cosine.

However, oscillations can be more complex. Damped oscillations occur when energy is gradually lost from the system, causing the amplitude of the oscillations to decrease over time. This can be due to friction or air resistance. Conversely, forced oscillations arise when an external periodic force is applied to a system, driving it to oscillate at the frequency of the driving force. Resonance is a phenomenon that occurs in forced oscillations when the driving frequency matches the natural frequency of the system, leading to a significant increase in the amplitude of oscillation. Oscillations are ubiquitous in nature and engineering, appearing in phenomena such as sound waves, light waves, electrical circuits, and the vibrations of structures.
