Osaproteesit are removable dental prostheses designed to replace one or more missing teeth in an arch when some natural teeth remain. They are supported by the remaining teeth (abutments) and the surrounding mucosa, and can restore chewing, speech, and appearance while fixed restorations or implants are not used or feasible.

Design and materials: A typical osaproteesi consists of a denture base that rests on the gum, artificial teeth to fill gaps, and connectors that join the teeth to the abutments. They may be retained with metal clasps or precision attachments. Common materials are acrylic resin for the base and teeth, sometimes with a metal framework (cast partial denture). Flexible partial dentures use polymers and often lack metal.

Indications and process: They are indicated when multiple teeth are missing but several teeth are still present, and when removable solutions are preferred or fixed restorations are unsuitable. Treatment involves impressions, bite registration, a trial setup if used, and a final fitting, with adjustments or relining as tissue changes occur.

Advantages and limitations: Advantages include lower cost, reversibility, and the ability to modify the appliance. They help prevent tooth movement and support aesthetics. Limitations include less stability than implants or fixed bridges, potential movement during function, wear on opposing teeth if not well balanced, and the need for good hygiene and regular dental checkups. They may require relining or replacement over time due to resorption of supporting tissues.

Care and maintenance: Osaproteesit should be cleaned daily with a soft brush and denture cleaner, not with regular toothpaste. They should be soaked in water or denture solution when not worn, and kept away from hot water. They should be removed at night and examined by a dentist regularly for adjustments and to monitor oral health.
