Orography is the science concerned with describing and mapping the Earth’s surface relief, including features such as mountains, valleys, hills, plateaus, and plains. It is a branch of physical geography and geodesy that focuses on the arrangement, form, and spatial distribution of landforms and their relationship to the landscape as a whole.

The term derives from the Greek oros (mountain) and graphia (description). In practice, orography covers the study of current terrain and the interpretation of how relief has been shaped by tectonic, erosional, and climatic processes over time. It is closely related to, yet distinct from, geomorphology and topography, providing frameworks for describing both vertical and horizontal variation in the surface.

Methods and data sources used in orography include topographic maps, digital elevation models (DEMs), remote sensing, LiDAR, radar, and field surveys. Modern orography relies on digital tools to extract terrain attributes such as slope, aspect, curvature, and hydrological networks, enabling detailed analysis of landscape structure and its evolution.

Applications of orography span several fields. In meteorology, terrain influences weather patterns through processes like orographic lifting, affecting precipitation and wind. In hydrology and water resources planning, relief controls watershed boundaries and flow directions. In planning and engineering, orography informs infrastructure design, risk assessment for landslides and floods, and aviation safety. The study of landforms also supports environmental management, land-use planning, and climate modeling.
