Orbitaalinen is an adjective used in Finnish to describe something related to orbitals, most often atomic or molecular orbitals in quantum chemistry and physics. The term derives from the noun orbi taali, or orbital, and is used to discuss properties, processes, or models that involve these probabilistic regions where electrons are likely to be found.

In quantum mechanics, orbitals are solutions to the Schrödinger equation for electrons in atoms. They are characterized by quantum numbers: the principal number n, the azimuthal number l, the magnetic number m_l, and the spin quantum number m_s. Orbitals have characteristic shapes associated with l: s (spherical), p (dumbbell-shaped), d and f (more complex). The energy of an orbital is influenced by n and by electron–electron interactions, which lift degeneracies present in a simple one-electron picture. The concept of orbitals is foundational to understanding electronic structure, chemical bonding, and spectroscopy.

In chemistry, orbital-based descriptions underpin electron configurations (for example, 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 for neon) and molecular bonding through molecular orbitals formed by linear combinations of atomic orbitals. Hybridization—such as sp, sp2, and sp3—describes how atomic orbitals mix to form directional bonds in molecules. Computational methods commonly used in quantum chemistry, such as Hartree–Fock and density functional theory, rely on orbital concepts to approximate electronic structure.

Distinctions: orbitals are probabilistic regions in quantum systems, while "orbit" refers to a classical path. The Finnish term orbitaalinen thus emphasizes the quantum-mechanical, probabilistic nature of electron distributions and their interactions in atoms and molecules.
