opptjeningsår
Opptjeningsår is a term used in the Norwegian social-security system to describe a calendar year in which a person earns income that qualifies for the accrual of pension rights. In the National Insurance Scheme (folketrygden), pension rights accumulate based on yearly earnings, so each year with qualifying income contributes to a person’s total entitlement to future benefits. The concept is central to how alderspensjon (old-age pension) and other benefits are calculated, since the lifetime pension depends on both the number of opptjeningsår and the level of earnings in those years.
How it works: Earnings in a given year that are subject to social-security contributions generate pension credits.
Significance and scope: The term is commonly used in official documents and public discussions about pensions
