Opptjeningsår

Opptjeningsår is a term used in the Norwegian social-security system to describe a calendar year in which a person earns income that qualifies for the accrual of pension rights. In the National Insurance Scheme (folketrygden), pension rights accumulate based on yearly earnings, so each year with qualifying income contributes to a person’s total entitlement to future benefits. The concept is central to how alderspensjon (old-age pension) and other benefits are calculated, since the lifetime pension depends on both the number of opptjeningsår and the level of earnings in those years.

How it works: Earnings in a given year that are subject to social-security contributions generate pension credits. Over many years, these credits build up and, together with the earned income level, determine the eventual pension amount. If a year contains no qualifying income, it may not contribute toward the accrual, though certain periods (such as parental leave, military service, or approved education) may be treated differently under specific rules. The rules can also change with reforms, so the exact impact of an opptjeningsår can vary by time and policy.
