In Italian, the plural form oppositi is commonly used to describe pairs of terms that stand in antonymy. In broader linguistic usage, the concept is known as antonymy, a relationship between words whose senses are, in some respect, opposed.

Antonyms are often categorized into three main types. Complementary antonyms are pairs where an instance of one excludes the other, leaving no intermediate state. Examples include open/closed, alive/dead, true/false, and on/off. Gradable antonyms exist on a scale, allowing degrees and comparisons; examples include big/small, hot/cold, fast/slow, and young/old.
