Opisovatel is a noun derived from the Slavic verb root opis- meaning “to describe, to write down.” With the agentive suffix -atel, it denotes a person who describes or records. In modern Russian, the standard term is opisatel’ (описатель), meaning a describer, chronicler, or commentator. The form opisovatel’ (описыватель) exists mainly in historical texts or linguistic discussions as an archaic or dialectal variant used to illustrate word formation from opisat’.

Historical usage centers on scribes, clerks, or enumerators who described events, possessions, lands, or other subjects. In medieval and early modern Slavic literatures, a person performing description or documentation might be referred to with forms related to opisat’, though opisatel’ is the more common modern spelling in Russian.
