Opetetus is not a widely established term in English-language scholarship. When it appears, it is most often a misspelling or variant rendering of Epictetus, the ancient Greek Stoic philosopher, or it may be encountered as a non-English form related to teaching. This article treats the most common association, Epictetus.

Epictetus (c. 50–135 CE) was born a slave in Hierapolis in Phrygia and acquired his freedom later in life. He taught philosophy in Rome before migrating to Nicopolis in Epirus, where he held sessions for a distant, devoted following. Although his teachings were preserved by his pupil Arrian in works such as the Discourses and the shorter Enchiridion, Epictetus did not author these texts himself. His philosophy emphasizes practical ethics and the belief that virtue is the only true good. Central ideas include the dichotomy of control—the distinction between what is within our power and what is not—virtue as sufficient for happiness, and the necessity of aligning one’s will with nature and reason. He stressed the importance of self-discipline, moral character, and the management of impressions (phantasiai) to maintain inner freedom regardless of external circumstances.

In modern usage, “Opetetus” is not standard; if encountered in references, it most often signals a misspelling of Epictetus or a non-English term for teaching. The better-known figure associated with the similar name is Epictetus, whose ideas influenced later Stoicism and, indirectly, modern therapeutic approaches that address cognition and behavior.
