Onychodysplasia refers to a group of congenital disorders that affect the development of the nails. These conditions can manifest in various ways, impacting the fingernails, toenails, or both. The severity and specific presentation of onychodysplasia can differ significantly among individuals and may range from minor cosmetic abnormalities to more significant functional impairments.

Common features of onychodysplasia can include nail hypoplasia, where nails are abnormally small or underdeveloped. Other manifestations might involve nail aplasia, meaning the absence of nails altogether. Additionally, the nails may be abnormally shaped, thickened, brittle, or discolored. The cuticle, the skin at the base of the nail, can also be affected, appearing absent or abnormally formed.

The underlying causes of onychodysplasia are often genetic, with mutations in specific genes leading to disruptions in nail formation during embryonic development. In some instances, onychodysplasia can be an isolated finding, while in others, it may be associated with broader genetic syndromes that affect multiple organ systems.
