Onoffsäädöt, a Swedish term, translates directly to "on-off adjustments" or "on-off controls." It refers to a type of control system or regulation where a process or device is either fully activated (on) or completely deactivated (off), with no intermediate states. This binary operation is characteristic of simple control mechanisms.

In practical applications, onoffsäädöt are commonly found in thermostats for basic heating systems. When the temperature drops below a set point, the heating element turns fully on. Once the temperature rises above another set point (often slightly higher to prevent rapid cycling), the heating element turns fully off. This on-off action creates a fluctuating temperature around the desired setting, a phenomenon known as hysteresis or deadband.

Other examples include simple light switches, where flipping the switch either completes the circuit and turns the light on, or breaks the circuit and turns it off. Similarly, many appliances operate on this principle, either running at full capacity or not at all. While straightforward and often cost-effective to implement, onoffsäädöt can lead to less precise control and potentially higher energy consumption compared to more sophisticated proportional or PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) control systems, which offer smoother transitions and more stable regulation.
