The typical workflow begins when a merchant requests payment authorization through a gateway or processor. The consumer provides payment information, which the gateway securely transmits to the processor. The issuer bank verifies the data and checks funds, returning an authorization or decline. If approved, the merchant captures the transaction, and funds are settled through the processor to the merchant’s account, usually in batches or in real time depending on the system.

Additional measures include two-factor or 3D Secure authentication, fraud detection systems, and risk scoring to reduce unauthorized use.
