ondergroeid is a Dutch adjective that describes a plant or other organism that has experienced stunted or limited growth, typically in relation to its expected size or development stage. The term is derived from the combination of the Dutch preposition onder, meaning “under”, and the verb groeien, meaning “to grow”. It is commonly used in horticulture, forestry, and environmental science to describe the effects of adverse conditions such as nutrient deficiency, water stress, competition, shading, or physical restrictions on roots or stems.

In practical use, an ondergroeid specimen may exhibit reduced height, fewer or smaller leaves, thinner stems, and delayed or suppressed reproductive output compared to its healthy counterparts. Gardeners may label plants as ondergroeid to indicate a need for additional care, such as fertilisation, irrigation, pruning, or transplanting to a more favourable site. In forestry, the term is applied to young trees that show poor growth due to crowding or past land use.
