Oljefilteret, the oil filter, is a device in internal combustion engines and other lubricating systems designed to remove contaminants from engine oil. By trapping metal particles, dust, and sludge, it helps protect engine bearings and extend engine life. Most filters are replaceable and are located along the oil circulation path.

In operation, oil is pumped from the sump through the filter element, where particulates are captured by media made from paper, cellulose, synthetic fibers, or mesh. Clean oil then returns to the engine’s oil galleries. Many filters incorporate a bypass valve that allows unfiltered oil to circulate if the filter becomes clogged, ensuring oil supply to critical components even during filter maintenance. An anti-drainback valve helps keep oil in the filter from draining back into the sump when the engine is off, reducing start-up wear.

Types of oil filters include full-flow (primary) filters, which treat the majority of circulating oil, and by-pass filters, which capture finer contaminants or provide additional filtration. Filters can be spin-on canisters or cartridge designs, and they may be replaced as part of a routine service or as part of a broader oil-change interval. The choice of filter is usually specified by the vehicle manufacturer or machinery designer.

Maintenance involves replacing the oil filter at or before the recommended service interval, using the correct type and size for the machine, and ensuring proper installation to prevent leaks. A clogged or leaking filter can cause reduced oil pressure, increased engine wear, and illumination of warning indicators. Outside automotive use, oil filtration systems are also employed in industrial equipment and turbines to maintain lubricant purity and performance.
