Oktanové refers to a characteristic or property related to octane, a component of gasoline. In the context of internal combustion engines, it is most commonly associated with "oktanové číslo," which translates to octane rating. The octane rating is a measure of a fuel's resistance to knocking or pinging during combustion. Knocking is an uncontrolled explosion of the fuel-air mixture in the engine cylinder, which can cause engine damage.

Higher octane fuels are more resistant to auto-ignition under pressure and heat. This is important for engines with high compression ratios or those that are turbocharged or supercharged, as these conditions increase the likelihood of knocking. Different grades of gasoline have different octane ratings, with premium fuels typically having higher octane numbers than regular or mid-grade fuels.

The octane rating is determined through standardized laboratory tests. The scale is based on comparing the knocking characteristics of the test fuel to a mixture of isooctane (which has an octane rating of 100) and n-heptane (which has an octane rating of 0). For example, a gasoline with an octane rating of 90 behaves like a mixture of 90% isooctane and 10% n-heptane in terms of its anti-knock properties.

Using fuel with an octane rating that is too low for a particular engine can lead to knocking, reduced engine performance, and potentially long-term damage. Conversely, using fuel with an octane rating significantly higher than what the engine requires typically does not provide any additional benefit and is simply more expensive.
