Ojek is a motorcycle taxi service widely used in Indonesia and, in some contexts, other parts of Southeast Asia. The term means “motorcycle taxi” in Indonesian and refers to riders who transport passengers on motorcycles, either as informal independent operators or through organized platforms.

Traditionally, ojeks operate as street-level services: riders position themselves at busy corners or along routes, pick up passengers, and negotiate a fare on the spot. Fares are often paid in cash, though some areas use meter pricing or app-based quotes. The service has been an important part of urban mobility, especially where public transit is limited or congested.

Since the mid-2010s, ride-hailing apps known as ojek online have transformed the sector. Companies such as Go-Jek (now GoTo) and Grab built digital platforms that connect riders with customers, enabling cashless payments, rider ratings, and expanded services beyond transport to include delivery and financial technology. The apps have helped shorten travel times and increased access to transportation in dense cities, while also creating new employment opportunities.

Regulation and safety practices vary by country and city. Indonesian authorities and other regulators have introduced licensing requirements, helmet and safety standards, and rules governing drivers’ status on platforms. Safety concerns—such as traffic accidents and inconsistent insurance—have prompted campaigns to improve rider training and helmet use. Economically, ojek services offer affordable, flexible transportation and income, though debates continue over labor protections and benefits for gig workers. The concept also appears in neighboring countries under similar models, with local adaptations and regulatory frameworks.
