Ohutneulabiopsia is a medical procedure used to sample cells or fluid from a lump, organ, or suspicious area using a thin needle. In English, it is commonly called a fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). The goal is to obtain material that can be examined under a microscope to help diagnose infections, inflammatory conditions, or malignancy.

Procedure and processing

The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis. Depending on the location, the clinician may use palpation or image guidance such as ultrasound, CT, or MRI to place the needle precisely. Local anesthesia is commonly used but not always required. A fine needle (typically 22–25 gauge) is inserted into the target and gentle suction draws cells or fluid into a syringe. Several passes may be made to improve sampling. The collected material is prepared as cytology slides or liquid-based preparations and is examined by a cytopathologist. Additional testing, such as cell blocks, immunocytochemistry, or molecular studies, may be requested when needed.

Indications, benefits, and limitations

FNAB is widely used for evaluating palpable breast, thyroid nodules, and superficial lymph nodes, as well as for sampling liver, kidney, or other lesions under imaging guidance. It offers rapid results with minimal invasiveness and a low risk of complications. However, it can yield insufficient or nondiagnostic samples, and it provides cytology (cellular detail) rather than full tissue architecture, which can limit certain diagnostic questions. In some situations a core needle or surgical biopsy may be preferred.

Safety and aftercare

Complications are rare but can include bleeding, hematoma, or infection at the puncture site. Most patients resume normal activities shortly after the procedure and may be advised on signs of infection or excessive bleeding to monitor aftercare.
