Ogenbouten, commonly called eye bolts, are fasteners with a circular or oval loop at one end and a threaded shank at the other. They are used to create secure attachment points for ropes, cables, or chains and are widely employed in lifting, rigging, and anchoring applications. Eye bolts are designed to bear loads primarily along the axis of the bolt; side loading, bending, or impact can cause sudden failure.

They come in various types, including shoulder eyebolts (with a shank and shoulder that bear on the bearing surface) and shoulderless or machine-screw types intended for threaded holes. Shanks may be fully threaded or partially threaded. Materials range from carbon steel for general use to stainless steels (such as grade 304 or 316) for corrosion resistance. Many eyebolts are stamped with a working load limit (WLL) or rated load by the manufacturer.

Standards for eyebolts are defined regionally; in Europe DIN 580 is commonly cited, while other regions follow ISO, ANSI/ASME, or national specifications. Selection depends on the load direction, environment, thread size, and required safety factors.

Installation and use require inspection and correct torque. Before use, check for cracks, deformation, or corrosion; ensure thread engagement is sufficient and that the bearing surface is flat and unobstructed. Use the correct eyebolts for lifting (not for axial off-axis loads), avoid side loading, and never exceed the specified WLL. Replace damaged eyebolts immediately.

Applications include lifting heavy objects with rope or chain, creating anchor points for temporary or permanent rigging, and securing loads in construction, maritime, and industrial settings.
