Offstoichiometric compounds are those whose composition deviates from the fixed integer ratios defined by their nominal formulas. The term is widely used in solid-state chemistry and materials science to describe materials that are not strictly stoichiometric, yet remain chemically and structurally well defined. Non-stoichiometry is especially common in metal oxides, chalcogenides, and fluorides, where the lattice accommodates defects that shift the composition away from perfect stoichiometry.

Deviations arise from point defects such as cation or anion vacancies, interstitials, and antisite defects (atoms occupying sites normally held by other species). The presence of these defects often requires charge compensation, leading to mixed valence states (for example Fe2+/Fe3+ in iron oxides) or to vacancies that balance oxygen or electron counts. Temperature, pressure, and chemical environment during synthesis set the defect concentration.

Non-stoichiometry can strongly affect physical properties, including electronic structure, ionic conductivity, magnetism, color, and diffusion kinetics. In many oxides, oxygen vacancies enable ionic conduction, which is exploited in solid oxide fuel cells and catalysis. The off-stoichiometric composition can also drive phase stability and defect ordering phenomena.

Common examples include wustite, Fe1−xO, where iron vacancies create non-stoichiometry; magnetite, Fe3−xO4, with cation vacancies/Fe3+/Fe2+ distribution; and ceria, CeO2−x, which exhibits oxygen vacancies that enhance ionic conductivity. Titanium dioxide can exhibit TiO2−x under reducing conditions; copper oxide Cu2−xO is another well-known non-stoichiometric oxide.

Because the deviations are often small (x small), off-stoichiometric compounds are often treated as fixed stoichiometric phases with defect chemistry influencing their properties rather than as fully separate materials. The study of off-stoichiometry is essential for understanding and exploiting functional materials.
