Ofäänenmenetys is a Finnish term that translates to "loss of voice" or "hoarseness." It refers to a condition where the voice becomes weak, rough, or disappears entirely. This can be a temporary or long-term issue and can affect individuals of all ages.

The primary cause of ofäänenmenetys is often inflammation of the vocal cords, medically known as laryngitis. This inflammation can be triggered by various factors, including viral infections like the common cold or flu, overuse of the voice (such as shouting or prolonged singing), or exposure to irritants like cigarette smoke or pollutants. Bacterial infections can also lead to vocal cord inflammation, though this is less common than viral causes.

Other potential causes for ofäänenmenetys include vocal cord nodules or polyps, which are growths that can develop on the vocal cords due to chronic strain. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can also cause stomach acid to irritate the vocal cords, leading to hoarseness.
