Odontogén is an adjective used in dentistry and pathology to describe anything related to odontogenesis, the process by which teeth develop, or to tissues derived from tooth-forming structures. The term derives from the Greek odontos (tooth) and -gen (producing).

In anatomy and embryology, odontogenic tissues include the dental epithelium and the ectomesenchymal components such as the dental papilla and dental sac. These tissues interact during tooth development to form enamel, dentin, cementum, and pulp. Odontogenesis proceeds through stages often described as dental lamina, bud, cap, and bell, with signaling pathways such as BMP, FGF, SHH, WNT, and EDA guiding growth, shape, and differentiation.

In pathology, odontogenic refers to diseases arising from odontogenic tissues. This encompasses a range of cysts and tumors of the jaw that are linked to tooth-forming apparatus. Examples include dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts (keratocystic odontogenic tumors), ameloblastomas, odontogenic myxomas, and odontomas, as well as calcifying odontogenic cysts. These lesions are usually associated with tooth-bearing regions of the jaws and reflect disturbances in odontogenic development or differentiation. The term helps distinguish odontogenic lesions from non-odontogenic jaw conditions, which originate from other tissues.

Classification is used to organize odontogenic lesions by origin and behavior, such as epithelial versus mesenchymal derivation, or cystic versus neoplastic. In clinical practice, the label odontogén aids in communicating the tissue of origin, guiding diagnosis, imaging interpretation, and treatment planning in dental medicine, oral surgery, and maxillofacial pathology.
