Oculars, or eyepieces, are the lenses placed at the viewer’s eye in optical instruments such as binoculars, spotting scopes, and telescopes. In binoculars, two oculars provide a stereoscopic view and are mounted in each optical tube near the observer’s eyes.

The ocular works together with the objective lens (the front element) to form a magnified image. The overall magnification is typically indicated on the instrument (for example, 8x or 10x), reflecting how many times larger the image appears. Eyepieces may be fixed or adjustable for diopter correction to accommodate differences between the user’s eyes.

Design variations include prism types, which influence size, weight, and brightness. Porro prisms and roof prisms are common configurations in binoculars, each with distinct optical paths. Lenses and prisms may carry coatings, such as anti-reflective or fully multi-coated layers, to improve light transmission and reduce glare. Many models feature adjustable eye relief, focus controls, and, in higher-end units, image stabilization or interchangeable oculars for different focal lengths.

Key specifications used to compare oculars include magnification, and the objective diameter (the front lens diameter, given in millimeters). Other practical measures are the field of view, exit pupil (the ratio of objective diameter to magnification), and close focusing distance. Higher magnification can reduce brightness and field of view, while larger objective diameters improve light gathering but add bulk.

Care and maintenance are straightforward: clean lenses with a soft cloth, use lens caps, and store in a protective case to prevent scratches and moisture damage.
