An obelisk is a tall, four-sided, narrow tapering monument that ends in a pyramidion. Originating in ancient Egypt, obelisks were typically carved from a single piece of stone, often red or grey granite, quarried at Aswan and transported to temple precincts. They were placed in pairs at temple entrances and dedicated to the sun god Ra, serving as permanent commemorations of rulers and religious narratives.

Design features include smooth, inscribed faces that carry hieroglyphic texts praising gods and kings. The inscriptions usually record dedications, victories, or offerings, and the pyramidion on top was often gilded to reflect sunlight. Building such monuments required sophisticated quarrying, transport, and construction techniques, including ramps and cranes or levers to raise the heavy stones.

Throughout history, obelisks were relocated beyond Egypt. The Romans transported several to Rome, where they were installed in public spaces and used to display imperial power. In later centuries, obelisks were moved to other parts of Europe and the Americas and repurposed as monuments or symbols of prestige. Notable examples include the Luxor Obelisk in Paris’s Place de la Concorde, Cleopatra’s Needle on the Victoria Embankment in London, and the Vatican Obelisk in St. Peter’s Square, Rome. The Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., completed in the 19th century, is a large modern example that mimics the classic obelisk form.

Today, obelisks remain common as commemorative or decorative works in cities around the world. They are studied for their inscriptions, historical context, and engineering methods, and they continue to symbolize endurance, authority, and cultural heritage.
