Næsefrakturer, commonly known as broken noses, occur when one or more bones in the nose are fractured. This can result from direct trauma, such as a blow to the face from sports, falls, or altercations. The most frequently broken bone in the nose is the nasal bone, but the septum, the cartilage that divides the nostrils, can also be injured.

Symptoms of a nasal fracture often include pain, swelling, bruising around the nose and eyes, and difficulty breathing through the nose. A visible deformity, such as a crooked nose, may also be present. In some cases, bleeding from the nose (epistaxis) or a clear nasal discharge may occur.

Diagnosis is typically made through a physical examination, where a doctor will assess the extent of the injury and check for signs of complications. Imaging studies like X-rays or CT scans may be used if the fracture is complex or if other facial injuries are suspected.

Treatment depends on the severity of the fracture. Minor fractures may only require pain management and ice to reduce swelling. If the nasal septum is displaced, causing breathing difficulties, or if there is significant deformity, closed reduction may be performed. This involves manually repositioning the bones without surgery, usually under local anesthesia. In more severe cases or when there are associated injuries, surgical intervention (open reduction) might be necessary to restore the nose's structure and function. Healing typically takes several weeks, and complications like chronic nasal obstruction or septal hematoma (a collection of blood within the septum) need prompt medical attention.
