Näytönpäivitys, often translated as screen refresh rate, refers to the number of times per second a display shows a new image. It is measured in Hertz (Hz), where a higher number indicates a smoother visual experience. For example, a 60Hz display refreshes the screen 60 times every second, while a 120Hz display does so 120 times per second.

The screen refresh rate significantly impacts the perceived motion fluidity on a display. In applications like gaming, watching videos, or even scrolling through web pages, a higher refresh rate results in less motion blur and a more responsive feel. This is because the display is updating more frequently, providing a more continuous stream of visual information.

Different types of displays have varying typical refresh rates. Standard monitors often operate at 60Hz or 75Hz. However, gaming monitors and high-end devices commonly feature refresh rates of 120Hz, 144Hz, or even higher to cater to the demands of fast-paced visuals. Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) technologies, such as NVIDIA G-Sync and AMD FreeSync, further enhance the experience by synchronizing the display's refresh rate with the frame rate of the graphics card, eliminating screen tearing and stuttering. The choice of refresh rate depends on the intended use of the device and the user's preference for visual smoothness.
