Näthinneskanning, also known as retinal scanning, is a biometric identification method that uses the unique pattern of blood vessels in the retina of an individual's eye for authentication. This pattern is highly distinctive and remains relatively stable throughout a person's life, making it a reliable source of biometric data.

The process involves directing a low-intensity infrared light beam into the eye. This light is absorbed by the melanin in the pigment epithelium layer of the retina, causing the blood vessels within the retina to absorb more light than the surrounding tissue. A specialized camera captures an image of this pattern. Sophisticated algorithms then analyze the captured image, converting the blood vessel network into a unique digital template. This template is then compared against a stored template for verification.

Näthinneskanning offers a high degree of accuracy and security due to the inherent uniqueness and difficulty in forging retinal patterns. It is considered a passive biometric, meaning the user does not need to actively interact with a sensor in a forceful way. Applications for retinal scanning include high-security access control, border control, and identification in sensitive environments. While generally considered safe, concerns can include the need for the user to hold still and focus on a light source, which may be uncomfortable for some individuals.
