Nässlemhinneinflammation, also known as rhinitis, is a common condition characterized by inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the nasal cavity. This inflammation can lead to a variety of symptoms, including a runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, and itching. The excess mucus produced can be clear or colored, and postnasal drip, where mucus drains down the back of the throat, is also a frequent complaint.

There are several causes of rhinitis. Allergic rhinitis, often called hay fever, is triggered by airborne allergens such as pollen, dust mites, mold spores, and pet dander. Diagnosis usually involves a review of symptoms and a physical examination. For allergic rhinitis, allergy testing may be performed to identify specific triggers. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and can include nasal corticosteroids, antihistamines, decongestants, and avoidance of identified triggers. In cases of infectious rhinitis, treatment is often supportive, focusing on symptom relief while the body fights off the infection.
