A nasal septum deviation occurs when the thin wall of cartilage and bone separating the two nasal passages, known as the nasal septum, is displaced to one side. The condition is relatively common and can be present from birth or develop due to injury to the nose.

Symptoms associated with a deviated septum can vary. Many individuals have a deviated septum without experiencing any noticeable problems. However, when symptoms do occur, they can include difficulty breathing through the nose, particularly during exercise or sleep. Nasal congestion, often on one side of the face, is a common complaint. Other potential symptoms include recurrent sinus infections, nosebleeds, facial pain, headaches, and a ringing in the ears or a feeling of pressure. Snoring and sleep disturbances can also be linked to a deviated septum.

Diagnosis of a nasal septum deviation is typically made through a physical examination of the nose, often using a light and a nasal speculum. In some cases, imaging studies like a CT scan may be used to assess the severity and extent of the deviation, especially if sinus issues are also present. Treatment options depend on the severity of the symptoms. For mild cases, nasal sprays or decongestants might be recommended to manage symptoms. However, for more significant deviations causing persistent breathing problems or other complications, surgical correction, known as septoplasty, may be considered. Septoplasty aims to straighten the septum and improve airflow.
