Nässekretion, also known as nasal discharge or rhinorrhea, refers to the production and expulsion of fluid from the nasal passages. This fluid, commonly called mucus or snot, is a vital component of the respiratory system's defense mechanisms.

The nasal mucosa, the lining of the nasal cavity, contains specialized glands that continuously produce mucus. This mucus serves several important functions. It moistens inhaled air, trapping dust particles, allergens, and microorganisms, preventing them from reaching the lungs. It also contains enzymes and antibodies that help to neutralize and eliminate pathogens.

The volume and consistency of nasal secretions can vary significantly depending on physiological conditions and environmental factors. For instance, increased nassekretion is a common symptom of the common cold or influenza, where the body's immune response leads to heightened mucus production to flush out the invading viruses. Allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, also triggers increased nassekretion as the immune system reacts to allergens like pollen or pet dander.

Changes in temperature and humidity can also influence nassekretion. Cold, dry air may cause a temporary increase in mucus production to humidify the inhaled air, while very humid air might lead to thinner secretions. Certain medications and medical conditions can also affect nassekretion. While generally a protective mechanism, excessive or persistent nassekretion can be uncomfortable and may indicate an underlying health issue requiring medical attention.
