Näringsfilmsmetoden, often abbreviated as NFT, is a hydroponic technique where nutrient-rich water flows in a thin film over a shallow, sloped channel, bathing the plant roots. This method is characterized by a recirculating system where the nutrient solution is pumped from a reservoir to the higher end of the channel and gravity-fed back down. The shallow depth of the nutrient film ensures that the roots are continuously exposed to oxygen while still absorbing nutrients and water.

Plants in NFT systems are typically grown in channels or gullies, which are often made of PVC or other inert materials. They are supported by an inert medium such as rockwool, coco coir, or perlite, which helps anchor the roots and retain some moisture. The slope of the channel is crucial, typically between 1% and 4%, to ensure proper flow and prevent water from pooling excessively, which could lead to root rot.

NFT is well-suited for growing a variety of crops, particularly leafy greens like lettuce, spinach, and herbs, as well as some fruiting plants like strawberries. The constant supply of oxygenated nutrient solution promotes rapid growth and efficient nutrient uptake. However, NFT systems can be susceptible to power outages, which can halt the nutrient flow and quickly stress the plants if not addressed. The relatively small volume of nutrient solution also means that fluctuations in pH and nutrient concentration can occur more rapidly, requiring regular monitoring.
