Näkötutkimus (vision research) refers to the scientific study of visual perception and processing. It spans disciplines such as psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, ophthalmology, and computer science, and investigates how the eyes and brain encode, transform, and interpret visual information from the environment. Key topics include color vision, depth and motion perception, object recognition, attention, and visual memory.

The field employs a variety of methods. Psychophysical experiments measure perceptual thresholds and subjective experiences, while eye-tracking records gaze and fixation patterns to reveal how observers inspect scenes. Neuroimaging techniques such as fMRI and EEG, as well as electrophysiological recordings, are used to study the neural underpinnings of visual processing. Computational modeling and machine learning help simulate visual processes and build models that can predict perceptual outcomes or support artificial vision systems.

Historically, näkötutkimus has developed from late 19th- and 20th-century psychophysics and physiology toward contemporary neuroscience and computer vision. The emergence of noninvasive brain imaging and advances in artificial vision have broadened the scope to include complex scene understanding, attention, and perceptual learning.

Applications of näkötutkimus are diverse. They include improving user interfaces and display design, enhancing visual ergonomics and safety in tasks such as driving or piloting, diagnosing and rehabilitating visual disorders, and guiding the development of assistive technologies and autonomous systems that rely on visual information processing.
