Nuclear technology refers to technologies that rely on nuclear processes to release, convert, or manipulate energy, and to enable scientific, medical, and industrial applications. It includes fission-based power generation, research and development in fusion, the production and use of radioactive materials, and the use of particle accelerators and other devices for imaging, therapy, and materials testing.

Nuclear fission is the process by which a heavy nucleus splits into lighter nuclei, releasing energy and neutrons. In commercial reactors, enriched uranium or plutonium fuels undergo sustained fission to heat a coolant, which drives a turbine to generate electricity. Key elements of a nuclear power plant are the fuel, a moderator or heavy water, a cooling system, containment structures, and control systems. The nuclear fuel cycle covers mining, conversion and enrichment of uranium, fuel fabrication, reactor operation, and management of spent fuel through reprocessing or disposal.

Nuclear fusion seeks to combine light nuclei to release energy and, if achieved at practical scales, could offer abundant fuel with fewer long-lived radioactive wastes. Fusion research is currently experimental, with projects using magnetic confinement and inertial confinement to reach the required temperatures and pressures.

Medical uses include radiopharmaceuticals for diagnosis and therapy, with imaging techniques such as PET and SPECT, and treatments including targeted radionuclide therapy. Industrial applications include nondestructive testing with radiography, materials analysis, sterilization of medical equipment, and irradiation of food to extend shelf life.

Safety and regulation focus on defense-in-depth, robust design, operator training, and emergency planning. Nuclear waste management seeks containment and isolation of radioactive materials for long periods, often in deep geological repositories. Incidents such as Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima influenced international safety standards and regulatory practices.

Policy considerations include nonproliferation, safeguards by international agencies, and export controls to prevent diversion of nuclear technology for weapons. Public communication and environmental stewardship are central to the development and deployment of nuclear technology.
