Notocoelomates is a term sometimes used in evolutionary biology to describe a hypothetical ancestral group of animals that possessed a notocoelom. The notocoelom is a type of body cavity that is considered to be a precursor to the true coelom found in many more advanced animals. In this theoretical model, the notocoelom was a dorsal, fluid-filled space that was not fully enclosed by mesodermal tissue as is the case with a coelom. It is hypothesized that this structure played a role in early animal locomotion and development, potentially providing a hydrostatic skeleton for movement.

The concept of notocoelomates is largely theoretical and debated within the scientific community. It emerged from attempts to reconstruct the evolutionary relationships of early metazoans, particularly the origins of the coelom and the body plans of major animal phyla. Some researchers have proposed that groups such as the Annelida (segmented worms), Arthropoda (insects, spiders, crustaceans), and Mollusca (snails, clams, squid), all of which possess true coeloms, may have evolved from ancestors that had a notocoelom.

However, the evidence for a distinct notocoelomate stage is not conclusive. Fossil records from the Precambrian and Cambrian periods are often incomplete, making definitive interpretations challenging. Furthermore, molecular phylogenetic studies, which analyze genetic data to infer evolutionary relationships, have provided varying hypotheses about early animal evolution, some of which do not necessarily support a distinct notocoelomate ancestor. The idea remains an interesting avenue for exploring the early diversification of animal body plans and the evolutionary pathways leading to complex organ systems.
