Normaaljõud, often translated as normal force, is a contact force exerted by a surface on an object in contact with it. This force acts perpendicular to the surface and opposes the tendency of the object to move through the surface. It arises due to the electromagnetic repulsion between the atoms of the surface and the atoms of the object at their points of contact.

The magnitude of the normal force depends on the forces acting on the object. In the simplest case, when an object rests on a horizontal surface and is not acted upon by any other vertical forces, the normal force is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to the object's weight. Weight is the force of gravity acting on the object, calculated as mass times the acceleration due to gravity (W = mg). Thus, in this scenario, the normal force (N) is equal to the weight (N = W = mg).

However, if there are other vertical forces, such as an applied push or pull, or if the surface is inclined, the normal force will adjust accordingly. For instance, if a downward force is applied to an object on a horizontal surface, the normal force will increase to counteract both the weight and the applied force. Conversely, if an upward force is applied, the normal force will decrease. On an inclined plane, the normal force is only the component of the object's weight that is perpendicular to the surface, not the entire weight.

The normal force is crucial in many physics problems, particularly those involving friction, as the frictional force (both static and kinetic) is often proportional to the normal force. It is a fundamental concept in mechanics and is essential for understanding the behavior of objects in contact.
