The northern wheatear is easily recognizable by its distinctive black-and-white plumage, particularly during the breeding season. Males exhibit a black head, throat, and upper breast, contrasting sharply with a white belly and rump. Females and juveniles have a more subdued appearance, with brownish upperparts and a paler underbelly. Both sexes feature a white tail with a black terminal band, which is a key identifying feature in flight.

Its diet consists primarily of insects and other small invertebrates, which it forages for on the ground or in low vegetation. The northern wheatear is known for its sharp, melodic song, often described as a series of clear, whistled notes.

Noortöötavatele is a migratory species, undertaking long-distance journeys between its breeding and wintering grounds. Its migration patterns are well-studied, with some populations traveling over 10,000 kilometers round-trip. The species is generally considered stable in numbers, though habitat loss and climate change may pose challenges to its populations in certain regions.
