Nonreactivity is a term used to describe a state or property in which a system does not readily undergo chemical reaction or psychological reactivity in response to stimuli. It is used across disciplines to denote a resistance to change initiated by an external trigger, though the exact meaning depends on the context.

In chemistry, nonreactivity describes substances that resist transformation under given conditions. This can result from a stable electronic configuration, such as noble gases, or from protective surface layers that block reactive sites. Reactions may be disfavored thermodynamically or kinetically, and some processes require extreme conditions to proceed.

In materials science, nonreactivity often refers to corrosion resistance and chemical inertness at the surface. Coatings, alloys, and oxide films are designed to reduce chemical attack, prevent catalysis, or minimize dissolution in aggressive environments. Examples include fluoropolymers, noble metals, and thin oxide layers that create a barrier between material and environment.

In psychology and contemplative practices, nonreactivity denotes the capacity to observe thoughts, emotions, and events without an automatic urge to react. It is a cognitive and emotional skill linked to mindfulness, emotional regulation, and distress tolerance, enabling greater equanimity in the face of stimuli.

Limitations include context dependence: a substance considered nonreactive at room temperature may become reactive under heat, pressure, or in different solvents, and individuals may exhibit nonreactivity only in certain circumstances.
