Nonparticipating is an adjective used to describe someone or something that does not take part in a specified activity, benefit, or outcome. It is commonly applied in insurance and finance to distinguish between items that share in profits or privileges and those that do not.

In insurance, a nonparticipating policy (nonpar) is one in which policyholders do not receive dividends from the insurer’s profits. Benefits such as the death benefit and premiums are typically fixed or guaranteed, and any potential profit from underwriting or investments remains with the company. Nonparticipating policies may still offer a cash value in some product types, but such value is not tied to profit sharing through dividends.
