Nominatiivsingl, or nominative singular, is the grammatical form used for a noun or pronoun when it appears in the nominative case in a language that marks case and number. It identifies singular number and typically marks the noun’s syntactic role as the subject or a predicative noun within the sentence.

In languages with explicit case systems, the nominative singular is commonly the form used for the subject of a finite verb and for predicative nouns after linking verbs. Adjectives modifying a nominative singular noun often agree in number and case with that noun. The nominative singular can also function as the dictionary or base form of the word in many languages, though the exact morphology varies by language.

Morphology and variation: The nominative singular form may be a fixed base form or may change through inflection, prefixes, or suffixes depending on the language. Some languages retain distinct nominative singular endings, while others use the same form across multiple cases or numbers for certain nouns. In languages with little or no noun inflection, the nominative singular is often determined by word order and pronoun forms rather than by surface endings.

Examples: In English, nouns do not generally inflect for nominative case in the singular, but pronouns have a nominative singular set: I, you, he, she, it. The subject noun phrase in a sentence like “The boy runs” is in nominative function, even though “boy” is not morphologically marked. In German, “Der Mann läuft” shows a distinct nominative singular form for the noun with a masculine article, whereas in Russian, “мальчик читает” uses the nominative singular noun form with no article.
