nominalse

Nominalse is a neologism used in speculative linguistics to describe a proposed class of morphemes or words that can function simultaneously as nouns and as modifiers within the same noun phrase. In this view, a nominalse behaves as a fused head-modifier unit: it denotes a referent while also carrying descriptive or relational meaning that constrains the noun it accompanies.

In terms of morphology and syntax, nominalse is imagined as a unit that may appear as an affix or clitic attached to a noun, or as an independent word that binds to the noun it modifies. Its defining feature is dual function: it can serve as the grammatical head of a noun phrase and, at the same time, express descriptive content that would otherwise require separate adjectives or classifiers. This makes it particularly relevant in analyses of languages with highly integrated noun–modifier systems.

Typologically, nominalse is discussed as a theoretical construct to account for compact expressions where the distinction between noun and modifier is blurred. It is related conceptually to adjectives, nominalization, and noun classifiers, but is proposed as a distinct category that hybridizes function and meaning in a single element.

Examples of nominalse are hypothetical and used for illustration. In a constructed language scenario, a phrase like karo-se vil could be interpreted as a nominalse form of karo meaning “house” combined with vil meaning “large,” yielding a translation such as “a large house” or “the house that is large,” depending on context.
