Niðurr is an Icelandic term that refers to the sycamore maple tree (Acer pseudoplatanus). The word derives from Old Norse “niðr”, which simply meant “maple” or “tree”, and the modern form is used in everyday Icelandic to describe either the species itself or cultivated specimens in gardens and parks. The sycamore maple is a deciduous tree that commonly reaches 20 to 30 metres in height, has deep, lobed leaves and produces small, pale fruit drupes that mature in late summer.
