The Nitrates Directive, officially Council Directive 91/676/EEC, is a European Union environmental law aimed at protecting water quality from nitrate pollution originating from agricultural sources. Adopted in 1991, the directive seeks to reduce and prevent further nitrate contamination of both surface and groundwater.
